Lois Newman is a Florida artist whose medium is watercolor. She loves how the unpredictability of watercolor's fluid nature draws her into a spontaneous response, like "visual jazz". Her hope is to have a unique and harmonious response to her subject expressed with warm and cool color, soft and hard edges- a syncopation of planing and not knowing. Lois paints directly from life whenever possible, and frequently without a preliminary drawing. During her recent travel to Maui and Costa Rica, she was struck by the dramatic contrast between the intense tropical heat and cool ocean breezes, and between the rainforest greens and the kaleidoscope colors of the ocean and sky. Everything seemed so alive, and the ordinary, sublime. This experience inspired her recent series of paintings.
